Artist We Love: Photographer/ Filmmaker Don Freeman

April 6th, 2012

Last year, I had the pleasure of collaborating with Don Freeman, a brilliant fine art and interiors photographer.  Don is a maestro at using natural light to capture the warmth and intimacy of his subject, from the smallest object to a richly appointed room:

Don’s passion project of the last several years has been capturing the landmark residences of over a dozen influential American artists and designers including Russel Wright, Frederic Edwin Church, George Nakashima and Paolo Soleri.  His images – lush and startlingly lovely  – were compiled in the wonderful book Artists’ Handmade Houses, which I own and adore.  A few highlights:

As I post, Don is reaching out to the design community to help finish Art House: A Break in Space, his documentary film on these incredible artists’ homes.  He cares deeply about keeping their cultural legacies alive and  told me how he felt that a film could truly capture the “heart and personality in these houses.”  This self-funded project took “a kinetic approach, using the camera to move through the space as the artist might.”   You can watch the trailer here:

I’m thrilled to support this project, which is historically vital, but also a cool trip inside the creative mind.  Check out Don’s Kickstarter page to learn more about it.

Meanwhile, I’d love to know what you think – are you inspired to make your space a more personal expression?

About

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated by design and the subtle impact of our surroundings.  Some of my earliest influences still resonate – I think of the dark woods and textured lodens of my father’s shooting club, the smell of fresh paint on a new canvas, and the bold symmetry of the Philip Johnson Glass house just down the street.
