Yesterday, I had the opportunity to stroll through the booths. I was particularly taken with some of the lighting and smaller furnishings I saw. Below are a few of my favorite pieces:

I love these fun and modern feather lights from Vita. For each lamp, actual feathers are attached by hand to a paper core.  

Pure femininity and architectural structure combine in this show-stopping, bronze chain-and-mesh Kelly Chandelier by Gabriel Scott. I like how timeless this piece looks; although it has a very modern feel, it could easily come from the Art Deco period, or even the 1980′s.

Fairtlough New York makes lovely handcrafted furniture. I adore this table, with its new take on clean lines and exotic skins.  

Another favorite was this rustic, modern chest from Tucker Robbins. I’m consistently impressed with this company’s beautiful furniture line.

I also snapped these bold lanterns in the Tucker Robbins booth. Made of a rattan weave over rice paper, the lights feel very handmade yet sophisticated.

An unusual find were these sleek brass-and-stone cocktail tables by Dering Hall. Of course, on their own, they could also easily work as side tables.

I can’t wait to integrate some of these finds into future projects!

While in the capitol, I visited the National Gallery of Art and the Library of Congress, both of which contain beautiful examples of classical architecture, such as marble floors and soaring, arched ceilings. I was equally intrigued by the modern architecture and decorative elements of  the east wing of the National Gallery of Art and Reagan National Airport (which we traveled in an out of).

I paid special attention to the ceilings and floors in each building, thinking about how I could incorporate some of what I saw into the Miami project.

Heading into the Design District, I usually stop in at Ascension  coffee bar for an iced cappuccino in the morning. The coffee is amazing (they source beans from all over the world and roast them in house), and I love the shop’s thoughtful rustic industrialism.

Then it’s off to mainstays and scout new shops in the Design District. Lately, I’ve been looking for furniture and fabric with a Mediterranean vibe for new projects in Miami and Las Vegas. If I have time on my way back to the office, I like to pop over to Velvet Taco for lunch.  My personal favorite is #9 - a pulled pork and blue cheese combo that is delicious.

On the way back to the office, I usually take a spin through Nick Brock Antiques on Henderson Ave. to see what new great things Nick has found. He specializes in furnishings, artworks, and lighting ranging from the 17th century through mid century. These were a few of my favorites items from a recent visit:

By the time I get back to the office, I’m usually fully inspired and ready to settle into the rest of the workday. Of course, there are other shops and restaurants I like to visit, but I’ll save those for another post!

The soiree benefited the Dallas Museum of Art, the Dallas Contemporary, and the Nasher Sculpture Center. This was the fifth annual fair, and it seemed like the entire Dallas art world came out for the party. It certainly felt like the place to be!

I was pleased to see some of my favorite New York City galleries represented, including Marlborough Gallery and Morgan Lehman Gallery. Afterwards, we finished the evening with fellow art-loving friends having dinner at  the adjacent hotspot Stephan Pyles.

The artworks, which were displayed at the Fashion Institute Gallery, ranged from contemporary pieces by emerging artists to those by established painters and sculptors. Following are some pictures of the works I particularly liked:

I’m already looking forward to attending next year’s gala AND filling my new Dallas walls with some of wonderful pieces.

Although he died in 1875, Labrouste was instrumental in the modern evolution of architecture. His iconic designs—which often integrated exposed metal frameworks, glass, and interesting use of light—still resonate today. The MoMA show is the first solo exhibition of Labrouste’s work in the United States, and it focuses on his designs for two of Paris’s most famous reading rooms, the Bibliothèque Nationale and the Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève.

The skylights and vaulted ceilings give an ethereal effect to the Bibliothèque Nationale reading room.

I adore the play of dark exposed metal work and light-drenched walls in the reading room of the Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève.
