Snapshots from Provence

May 24th, 2012

After the whirlwind preparing the Owner’s Suite for the Riviera’s Christening cruise from Monte Carlo, I was elated to spend a day in picturesque Provence. We toured through Marseille, a historic area often referred to as the oldest city in France, as well as the small villages of Lourmarin, Roussillon and Gordes.

Lourmarin is one of the iconic medieval villages with its Renaissance chateau and lovely patina, while Roussillon is known for its ochre hills where they “mine” the ochre that colors the buildings in town. Gordes is built on rock, and has wonderful mortar-free stone walls that look impressively scenic.

As always, I took photos of the signature details, so often where design inspiration strikes…

Architectural detail in Lourmarin

Café seating in Lourmarin

A shop in Lourmarin

A private artist garden in Roussillon visible by a rooftop restaurant

Ochre-colored shutters in Roussillon

Subtle tones of grey and brown stonework against the familiar pale blue shutters in Gordes

My thanks to Oceania for this lovely port of call along the Riviera‘s christening voyage.

About

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated by design and the subtle impact of our surroundings.  Some of my earliest influences still resonate – I think of the dark woods and textured lodens of my father’s shooting club, the smell of fresh paint on a new canvas, and the bold symmetry of the Philip Johnson Glass house just down the street.
