Designer Driveways – 5 Favorites

April 18th, 2011

I just had my driveway repaired after three months of snowplow abuse. As much as I like the look of pea gravel – its completely impractical in the Northeast.

Here are a few driveways also needing a lot of TLC.  Boy are they gorgeous!

Is it a driveway or an artist’s installation?  This fabulous driveway is in Naples, Florida.

Bunny Williams’ driveway outside her entertainment barn – I love how the Belgian block is used between the gravel.

Feels like Florida – but it’s Nantucket. Those are crushed white shells on the driveway. The curved grass patches between the driveway are so graphic.

Another Nantucket driveway. This is one of my favorite treatments – grass grid between pavers. Refined and Gatsby-like!

More crushed shells. This Naples, Florida driveway wins for the pineapple-topped pink gate and coordinating pink climbing roses.

About

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated by design and the subtle impact of our surroundings.  Some of my earliest influences still resonate – I think of the dark woods and textured lodens of my father’s shooting club, the smell of fresh paint on a new canvas, and the bold symmetry of the Philip Johnson Glass house just down the street.
