Sporty Chic

August 6th, 2012

Midway through the Summer Olympics, I’m amazed by the  athleticism on display – to say nothing of the uniforms spanning the whole spectrum of style.

Watching the athletes and their outfits and uniforms made me think how the discipline and vigor of a trained athlete could translate to an interior .  I always prefer a modern traditional look and there is not a team logo to be seen here; rather, it’s the essence of sport expressed in subtle, cohesive design.  To illustrate, I broke it down into a few key ideas:

1. Movement – Using bold and diagonal stripes to evoke movement and the energy of an infinite line. Or the use of curved edges to evoke a racetrack:

2. Materials – Sleek reflective metals, smooth glass, high gloss paint evoke the clean precision of an athlete – or the stadium or court they perform in.

3. Color – Bold use of historically athletic colors like crisp white, silver, red and navy blue.  All these images remind me of a crisp white tennis outfit or in the case of the kitchen, a sleek gloss of a swimmers cap and suit:

About

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated by design and the subtle impact of our surroundings.  Some of my earliest influences still resonate – I think of the dark woods and textured lodens of my father’s shooting club, the smell of fresh paint on a new canvas, and the bold symmetry of the Philip Johnson Glass house just down the street.
