Designer Secrets: Decorating with Books

By Susan Bednar Long · Comments (0)
Thursday, June 21st, 2012

With a little design savvy, great reads can double as polished decor, adding depth and character to any space.   I routinely use books to create a polished, finished look in my interiors and in my own home.  For those coveting this look, I’ve outlined some of my favorite techniques for styling with books:

1. Color blocking on bookshelves

interior accessorizing tips

I love to group art books on shelves by color and in graduated horizontal piles. Add picture frames or other items intermittently to style bookshelves that are not completely filled with books. In the above example, the interior of the shelves were painted chocolate brown, which visually fills out the shelves.

interior design tips

Simply organize hardcover books by color to transform a bookshelf into a statement itself.  Here, each shelf has a different color scheme, adding a modern element to this otherwise traditional office.

Create contrast with colors and lines. In the example above, books were placed in both vertical and horizontal directions. Alternate shelves were decorated with white pottery, creating a unified white and blue palette.

2. Stacking decorative books

To fill expansive table surfaces, I like to stack decorative books in graduated low piles either in the center or around the perimeter. The trick is to pay attention to height relationships. Create dynamic interest by establishing one tall focus or adding accessories on top of books.  Above are variations on this technique - a sculpture, vase of flowers, urn or hurricane lamp balance the low stack to look ordered and curated.

3.  Grounding flowers and objects with books

Books can serve as a transition between two objects; they can create a foundation and sense of order, similar to a tray; or, they can change the height of a displayed object to give it a more pronounced showcase. Use flowers or plants in conjunction with books to add height to a group of accessories.

New Luxury Shops in New York City

By Susan Bednar Long · Comments (0)

While we all love a high profile art gallery opening, I often have my eye on the newest interior shops to hit the New York design scene. Here are three new storefronts I think will be among those furnishing tomorrow’s most luxurious New York City penthouses.

Holland & Sherry Bespoke

Famous for their fine menswear-inspired textiles, the Holland & Sherry brand recently opened its first New York City store at 209 Elizabeth Street in trendy Nolita (or as some like to call it, the new Soho).

The whimsical, Scottish-inspired shop is housed in the Elizabeth Street Gallery, which was designed by architect Eric Hilton. The store showcases a wide range of new home collections including custom-made furniture, hardware, rugs, embroideries and wallcoverings among other accessories.

Decor NYC

If you’ve been pining for a piece from this year’s Kip’s Bay show house or one of the sleek D&D showrooms, you should make haste to the designer consignment trove Decor NYC.

Opened earlier this year, it’s a haven for high-end furnishings acquired from stagings, commercial sets and newly-upgraded homes. Owner Bruce Tilley described his inventory as, “anything from period antiques to midcentury to the ’70s, as well as new product,” all styled in tasteful vignettes.

Stepevi

Also this spring, the esteemed Turkish-based rug comapny, Stepevi unveiled its first North American location in the heart of Soho at 147 Wooster Street.

Known for their edgy, high-end rug designs and rich textures, Stepevi’s new storefront is a 2,500-square-foot space designed by international Mosque designer Zeynep Fadillioglu. As The New York Times noted, their Manhattan debut was inevitable after successful launches in Paris, London, Milan and Istanbul.

I recommend some window shopping at the very least.

Snapshots from Spain

After basking in the patinas of Provence, it was time to soak in the sights and savory flavors of Spain. The Riviera’s Christening cruise from Monte Carlo brought me to Valencia and Barcelona where I was able to enjoy local color, architecture and traditional Spanish dishes. Here’s a taste of the sensory treats that caught my eye.

I love when my work allows me to experience such vibrant cities and rich history. I hope you find as much inspiration from these slices of Spanish culture as I do.

June Blooms

By Susan Bednar Long · Comments (0)
Saturday, June 2nd, 2012
Since the rain gods were a little overzealous throughout the month of May (at least they were here in Connecticut), I thought we deserved a bit of eye candy.  Winston Flowers is a Boston-based company newly planted in Greenwich and they bring some modern, sophisticated flair to the Avenue. I’ve enjoyed their dramatic windows over the last month and thought I’d stop in for a closer look:

All in all, not a bad way to brighten a stormy day.  Happy June!

Snapshots from Provence

By Susan Bednar Long · Comments (1)

After the whirlwind preparing the Owner’s Suite for the Riviera’s Christening cruise from Monte Carlo, I was elated to spend a day in picturesque Provence. We toured through Marseille, a historic area often referred to as the oldest city in France, as well as the small villages of Lourmarin, Roussillon and Gordes.

Lourmarin is one of the iconic medieval villages with its Renaissance chateau and lovely patina, while Roussillon is known for its ochre hills where they “mine” the ochre that colors the buildings in town. Gordes is built on rock, and has wonderful mortar-free stone walls that look impressively scenic.

As always, I took photos of the signature details, so often where design inspiration strikes…

Ochre-colored shutters in Roussillon

Subtle tones of grey and brown stonework against the familiar pale blue shutters in Gordes

My thanks to Oceania for this lovely port of call along the Riviera‘s christening voyage.

About

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated by design and the subtle impact of our surroundings.  Some of my earliest influences still resonate – I think of the dark woods and textured lodens of my father’s shooting club, the smell of fresh paint on a new canvas, and the bold symmetry of the Philip Johnson Glass house just down the street.
